Sharing two comics based on the life of  two famous presidents of USA.

Some interesting material found at net about Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) & John F. Kennedy (1917–1963).

• Both presidents' last names (Lincoln and Kennedy) have 7 letters.
• Both presidents have five syllables in their full name (which counts Kennedy's middle initial).
• Both presidents were elected to the House of Representatives in '46.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846

John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

• Both were runners-up for the party's nomination for vice-president in '56.
• Both presidents were elected to the presidency in '60.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. 

John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

• The male companion of the other couple was wounded by the assassin.

• Both were succeeded by Southerners (their Vice Presidents).
• Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.
• There are 6 letters in each Johnson's first name.
• John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy was born in 1939.
• Both assassins were known by their three names. 
• Both names are made of fifteen letters.
• Mr. Booth shot Lincoln in a Theatre called "Ford". Lee Harvey Oswald, shot Kennedy in a car called "Ford" Lincoln.
• Booth ran from a theater and was caught in a warehouse. Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater.
• Both John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald were killed before they could be put on trial.

A month before Lincoln was shot he was in Monroe, Maryland.

A month before Kennedy was shot he was with Marilyn Monroe.

Cosmo the Merry Martian and Venus, the Queen of Venus


Presenting today, Cosmo the Merry Martian #4, from 1960, written (presumably) and drawn by Bob White. Since the series only lasted six issues we're 2/3 of the way through the run. I know I've been dilatory about getting these scans done and posted, Cosmo fans. What can I say, I'm slow.

The first three issues of Cosmo are in Pappy's #794 for issue #1; issue #2 is presented in Pappy's #907, and #3 is posted in Pappy's #976.

Queen Venus of Venus causes some sexual jealousy in Cosmo's Martian gf, Astra. And why not? Cosmo, as well as his little buddy Orbi, and the Oog moonmen are all smitten by Venus's swimsuited beauty. Astra leaves in a huff, and later it develops that Venus wants Cosmo for the king! Poor Astra. Well, anyway, it works out. As I've mentioned before, the Martians are shaped like phalluses,and Cosmo is the biggest of them all. No wonder Venus wants him.

Matt Murdock's Other Great Idea

I've talked in the past about his silly notion of convincing Foggy and Karen that his hitherto-unseen brother Mike was actually Daredevil.  That was ludicrous enough (although reasonably entertaining), but things got really bizarre when he came up with an even wilder idea of how to protect his secret identity:

See, he fakes a pilot's license and hires a plane, and then blows it up:

So now DD's problems are over.

Well, except for one thing; Matt Murdock's cane which doubles as Daredevil's billy club, is at the office. So he heads over there, but:

Despite his understanding, he follows her home and steals the cane.  No, I am not kidding:

Okay, so at least he feels guilty about it, eh?

Now remember, Matt's not just a lawyer; he's supposed to be one of the best in the business.  And what is it lawyers are supposed to be good at?  Figuring out all the ramifications of a possible decision, right?  I mean, that's why we hire them to look over our contracts, and why our contracts get more and more detailed over time.

But Matt hasn't thought this idea through.  It's not half-baked--it isn't even defrosted!  For example, there are the little things, like, oh, a place to sleep.  And bigger things, like putting the girl whom he supposedly loves through the agony of believing that he's dead.  And even the idea that he should not have blown up an airplane that didn't belong to him.

Brush and pen: two by Lee Elias


Readers, I see the scrolling viewer that has given me so much heartburn this past week is gone. Did Blogger get feedback that convinced them to go back to the old way? My biggest complaint was when going into my archives it was a hassle to read my old postings. StatCounter showed that total readership for this blog was down by 1/3 this past week. I suspect it might have been that viewer.

And now, as they say, back to our regularly scheduled program...


Lee Elias had a varied comics career from the 1940s to the '80s: artist's assistant (George Wunder, Al Capp), syndicated strip (Beyond Mars), comic book artist (Fiction House, Harvey, DC, Warren, among others), and in his later years, a magazine illustrator and painter. In comic books Elias' work shows up in love, war, science fiction, horror and mystery comics, not to mention the sexy masked Black Cat, or a space hero like Tommy Tomorrow. The two stories here are a couple of those little gems from DC's mystery-science fiction comics of the '60s. "My Brother Is A Robot" evokes the Adam Link stories of Eando Binder, and is a poignant tale from 1960's My Greatest Adventure #42. It has a gorilla, too. A plus for me!

"Bang! Bang! You're Dead!" is from Tales Of the Unexpected #102, 1967. This story has a young protagonist able to see invisible monsters with a pair of mysterious glasses, and not believed by his parents.

Elias' versatility as an artist shows in both these stories. "Robot" is inked with a brush, the favorite tool of comic artists since the days of Milton Caniff, a style with which Elias excelled. He used a pen for inking "Bang!", filling in black areas with the brush. Either way works, although "Robot" appears smoother and slicker with its tight brushwork. The pen brings out some dynamics in "Bang!" with the shorter, looser strokes of the pen.

Elias was born Leopold Elias in the UK in 1920, emigrated to the US, and died in 1998 at age 77.
